Allergies and Asthma Centre
The prevalence of allergies is on the rise, but many allergic disorders are often not diagnosed and not optimally treated. Allergic disorders are mostly chronic in nature and can have a serious impact on quality of life and in some cases allergies can even be fatal.
At the Allergy and Asthma centre you will benefit from a committed medical practitioner dedicated to assist you with diagnosing and managing allergic conditions. Identification of your allergen can help you to implement the appropriate measures to improve your symptoms of allergies and asthma.
We aim to establish a long-term partnership with our patients to provide support, counselling and education to adults and children suffering from Asthma and Allergies. In this way patients gain understanding and will be empowered to take control of their health.
Diagnosis and Treatment of allergic conditions including:
– Food Allergies
– Allergic Rhinitis (Hay fever)
– Insect Allergies
– Chronic Urticaria (Hives)
– Latex Allergies
– Preservative Sensitivity
– Drug Allergies
– Occupational Allergies
Skin Prick Testing
SPT is a safe and quick way to test for substances that may potentially cause allergies. You can test for sensitisation to allergens that you inhale that can worsen your Asthma and Hay fever symptoms for e.g. grass pollen, tree pollen, cat dander, dog dander, house dust mites and moulds. One can also test for possible food allergies. The most common food allergies include peanut, milk, egg, wheat, soya and fish.
Bee Venom Desensitisation
(Subcutaneous immunotherapy) This is offered to carefully selected patients with severe reactions to bee sting. Subcutaneous immunotherapy involves injections of diluted venom at regular intervals to reduce the risk of future severe reactions to bee stings.
Some patients with troublesome allergies, despite good medical treatment may benefit from oral immunotherapy for desensitisation to airborne allergens such as house dust mites, grass pollens, tree pollens, cats, dogs and certain moulds. The vaccine is given daily as drops under the tongue.
Counselling about your specific allergy, trigger avoidance and optimal treatment use will be given.
Asthma Education and Treatment
We aim to achieve excellent asthma control for each patient. This is done by optimising medical therapy and focusing on asthma education. Patients will be trained to correctly use their controller and reliever devices. Asthma control will be evaluated at each visit and patients will receive a personalised asthma action plan.
Patients will be counselled on the nature of eczema and how to care for their skin during maintenance and acute flare phases.
Patients will be educated on the signs of anaphylaxis and will be issued with a personalised emergency action plan so that they will be prepared in an emergency situation.
Patients will be referred to the appropriate specialists and allied health professionals where needed.
GENEWAY™ – Genetic Analysis
Genetic testing enables personalised medicine. Personalised medicine is evolving extremely quickly with new research being published almost daily.
This significant expansion in genomic research made genetic testing accessible to health care professionals and their patients.
HOW TO OPTIMISE YOUR UNIQUE WELLNESS
The GENEWAY tests screen for genetic variations that may affect your health and weight or already do! You can reduce the susceptibility to the risks, by being proactive and implementing the science-based strategies recommended to you. These may vary from modest changes in your environment, your diet, physical activity or adjustments in the medications and nutritional supplements you take.
WHICH GENES WILL YOU BE TESTED FOR?
The identification of actionable genetic variants allows you, together with a health care professional, to formulate a plan to make adequate and timely changes to introduce preventive measures.
The GENEWAY™ Screen Test, cover the following areas:
– Cholesterol and lipid metabolism
– Dietary carbohydrate sensitivity
– Dietary fat sensitivity
– Exercise responsiveness
– Heart disease
– Homocysteine metabolism
– Insulin sensitivity and risk for diabetes
– Iron metabolism
– Drug metabolism
– Oxidative Stress
– Overweight and obesity risk
– Circadian rhythms (sleep disorders)
– Vitamin-B metabolism
Why get tested?
Apt decisions start with knowledge. By knowing more about your genetic make-up, you are able to take steps towards a healthier life.
Where are samples collected?
The samples can be collected by a health care practitioner or by you in a non-clinical setting (usually at home). The details of the accredited health care practitioners can be found on the website: www.geneway.co.za.
Is the kit easy to use?
Yes. The DNA sample collection kit comes complete with step-by-step instructions for quick and easy cheek cell collection using the swab provided. Sample collection takes only a few minutes and is completely safe and painless.
Is the DNA test confidential?
Completely. GENEWAY ensures complete discretion and client confidentiality. Results will only be released to the persons specified (eg you and your health care professional). All client files are password protected.
What is a ‘buccal’ swab, and is it as accurate as blood?
A swab looks like a long cotton wool bud. It is used to collect cheek cells from the inside of the mouth. DNA is consistent throughout the body, so the DNA in cheek cells is identical to the DNA in blood cells. The swab allows for non-invasive and painless collection of DNA.
What about confidentiality of data?
All data will be treated with strict confidence and will not be passed on to third parties.
Is there a minimum age for genetic testing?
No, there is no minimum age. Collection of DNA samples is safe for all ages and painless.
What is the consent form for?
It is a legal requirement that each person providing a sample for a DNA test must give their consent for DNA testing to be carried out. In the case of minors, individuals suffering from a mental disorder or those who are not in a position to give their own consent, a legal guardian or a person having parental responsibility for the individual must consent. Under the Human Tissue Act it is a criminal offence to take a sample from someone to test their DNA without their consent, except for medical purposes and lawful investigative purposes, for example a criminal investigation.
How long does it take before the results are available?
In most cases, the results of a test take between 1 – 3 weeks.
Can age or drug consumption affect the results?
No. Age and drug consumption do not affect the results. A person’s DNA does not change over time.
What are the implications of knowing your DNA?
Genes are hereditary, thus knowing something about your genetics also means your close relatives have similar genes. Your family may or may not want to know this information as well, and relationships with others can be affected by learning about your DNA.
Do I need a Genetic Counsellor?
The genetic testing you will undergo is not diagnostic nor deterministic of a possible risk outcome. The genetic risks for the conditions tested for are influenced by multiple factors, most of them being modifiable and thus preventative of the mentioned risk associations. For the majority of clients there is no requirement to receive genetic counselling. However, should you feel the need, ask your doctor to refer you to a Genetic Counsellor.
Slender Wonder is a medical weight loss programme that treats patients who struggle with being overweight or obesity.
Only Slender Wonder accredited doctors, who were trained by the organisation, are allowed to prescribe and distribute the programme.
Slender Wonder was developed by a South African doctor, Dr Jan Botha and has more than 200 accredited doctors countrywide. Their safe and affective weight loss programme has evolved over 40 years with tens of thousands of patients being treated successfully in South Africa.
This is not a weight loss programme based on kilojoules, but, rather a formula based on a low GI eating plan, our Slender Wonder products (shake and supplements), as well as a series of injections that helps to improve the body’s Leptin sensitivity. Depending on the patient’s starting weight, most individuals lose up to 4 – 7 kg’s in the first month. Once you reach the maintenance phase, your Leptin sensitivity will have been restored and this will help you to maintain your new weight provided you continue to follow a healthy lifestyle!
The programme is based on treating low leptin levels and has three components: a low GI eating plan, supplements in the form of capsules and a series of injections. The injections bring the leptin levels back into balance and help rid the body of “abnormal” fat in a safe and controlled way. Leptin is a hormone that is secreted by fat cells in white adipose tissue and has been found to be a signal to the brain, thus having primary influence on body weight. During a person’s lifetime, leptin levels drop. This drop may be accredited to the use of cortisone or the presence or progesterone and oestrogen. For this reason, some young girls are prone to obesity during puberty. Women who are taking contraceptives, pregnant women and those who have had hysterectomies, especially when it goes together with hormone replacement therapy, are also prone to lower levels of Leptin.
Treating the symptoms and putting patients on a strict diet may work. However, if the leptin levels are not stabilised first, patients will put the weight back on once they start eating normally again. This is what makes the Slender Wonder programme different from other weight loss programmes.
Slender Wonder focuses on the cause of obesity and not only the symptoms!
Are there any STIMULANTS in the supplements?
Will I have to continue using the supplements when I’ve reached my goal weight?
No – (there is no dependency factor)
What if I have Sugar Diabetes (type 2) or other health problems?
This program has helped many people to improve their blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels and general health (please consult your Physician if you have any doubts)- See testimonials
What if I travel /eat out a lot?
We will give you solutions and suggestions – it’s about choices.
Will I ever be able to eat ‘normally’ again?
Yes, within certain limitations..
Do I have to buy ‘special foods’?
No, it’s normal food that you can buy at normal grocery stores.
Do I have to cook separately for me and the rest of my family?
No, not necessarily. They can all benefit from eating more healthily! – it’s really GOOD FOOD!
What if I ‘cheat’?
You will slow down the weight-loss, however, once you get back onto the plan, you will start losing again.
How does this plan differ from all the others?
The underlying cause of overweight is being treated and this leads to DEEP LASTING CHANGE.
Can I use Slender Wonder while I am breastfeeding?
Breastfeeding patients can do the programme; they must not do the detox phase and no Herbaboost should be taken as the possible effects of these herbs may have on infants have not been properly researched.
All other supplements (except Lipo-Lite Drops) are safe to use during breastfeeding. Slender Wonder’s official stance is to rather not initiate the programme during the first three months after birth – apart from possible medical reasons this is to give mother and baby time to bond and not to place unnecessary stress on the mother during this critical developmental phase.
